Elongated or misshapen earlobes can occur with life or naturally with age. Most commonly, earlobe clefts can result from longstanding wear of heavy earrings, placement of a spacer or gauge, or the unintended pulling of an earring. With stretch, the widened piercing hole makes wearing an earring difficult and the appearance undesirable. The earlobe cleft can be incomplete (an elongated piercing hole) or complete (separating the earlobe), on one side or both. Our Surrey earlobe repair surgery can correct these issues.
You may simply wish to wear an earring that won’t fall out from the piercing. You may feel self-conscious about your ear appearance. Fortunately, earlobe piercings and the lobule deformity can be restored to a reasonable contour with surgical correction. Dr. Ratanshi offers surgery to cosmetically recreate a natural earlobe contour.
Earlobe appearances vary from person to person. During your consultation for earlobe repair Surrey plastic surgeon, Dr. Imran Ratanshi, will review your specific concerns and tailor a treatment plan that works best for you. Earlobe repair takes 30 to 60 minutes and can be performed in the office under local anesthesia.
Incisions are planned while upright to account for the natural position of the ear when standing. The incisions enable Dr. Ratanshi to rearrange the local earlobe tissue to achieve an improved contour. The earlobe is closed in layers using dissolving stitches and a gentle ointment applied that can be easily changed at home by any patient. You can expect some minor bruising and swelling which takes one to two weeks to settle. Your incision will heal with a fine line scar. Aftercare instructions and follow-up appointments will be provided by Dr. Ratanshi and his nurse the day of surgery.
Earlobe repair surgery is performed safely in the office under local anesthesia. During the procedure, Dr. Ratanshi removes excess skin and soft tissue that contribute to the stretched earlobe, and he performs tissue rearrangement where needed to help provide a natural curve and more youthful appearance.
Earlobe correction is a minimally invasive procedure. Risks you should be aware of include but are not limited to:
Patients may experience swelling which often settles within 1-2 weeks, although some patients may have swelling that persists longer. If bruising occurs it often resolves within 2-4 weeks. Over-the-counter pain medication taken at scheduled intervals is sufficient to manage post-surgical discomfort in most patients. Patients at higher risk of infection may require a short course of antibiotics.

Earlobe restoration is a cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance of the earlobe. It is NOT a benefit of MSP and often not a benefit of Private Insurance. Fees vary based on whether one or both ears require correction, the degree of elongation of your piercing hole, and if this extends through and through to the border of the ear. Closure of more extensive gauge piercings is more complicated and time-consuming.
Dr. Ratanshi has also partnered with Beautifi and iFinance Canada to provide alternative options for you if needed. You can review rates and terms at the links below. You may also wish to discuss financing with your private lender.

Yes, absolutely! Dr. Ratanshi recommends waiting 3 months after surgery before re-piercing the ear. Some may choose to pierce their ear just adjacent to the scar in a more central position on the ear lobe. You should avoid wearing heavy earrings regularly and opt for lighter piercings for a longer-lasting result.
Yes, you will heal with a fine line scar. However, in some rare cases patients may be prone to abnormal scar formation called hypertrophic or keloid scars.
Earlobes will naturally stretch with age as the skin loses elasticity and becomes more loose. This is a process that takes many years. Dr. Ratanshi recommends avoiding wearing heavy earrings on a regular basis as this may expedite this process.

If I need revision surgery, is there a cost?
Yes, there is a cost. But it is typically less than the initial surgery.
Most patients can expect an excellent result after a single surgery. Although uncommon, complications can occur unpredictably despite efforts to reduce their incidence during your initial surgery. As a result, revision surgery does incur a cost. These costs can vary depending on the time and surgical strategy needed to address the concern.
