With age, the lower eyelids can develop a more tired, weathered appearance from the accumulation of extra skin. This can be exaggerated if the outer cheek also descends below the bony rim below your eye. Weakness in the supporting structures of the eyelid may cause the fat that cushions the eye to bulge outward. The eyelid itself may become more thin and lax with time.
Lower Eyelid Surgery is a cosmetic procedure designed to rejuvenate the appearance of the lower eyelids.
Eyelid Lift Surgery, known as an Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that targets the lower eyelids to address issues such as:
The lower eyelids share an important relationship with the cheek. The combination of your cheekbone and the soft tissues in this area also help support the lower eyelid. Assessing this area is an important part of understanding factors that contribute to lower eyelid aging.
In patients who have loose lower eyelids, a tightening procedure, or ‘canthopexy’ may be required. This is to reduce the risk of eyelid drooping downward. It does require additional time and complexity to perform. Loss of volume in the cheeks can also make bulging lower eyelids more noticeable. The addition of fat to help support the cheek is one of the more recent advancements in lower eyelid surgery that has transformed the rejuvenating potential of this procedure. It helps provide a more youthful cheek appearance as well as a smoother transition between the cheek and the lower eyelid. Our Surrey lower eyelid surgery may be combined with Brow Lift Surgery to address eyebrow descent and Upper lid Blepharoplasty if there are upper eyelid concerns.
During your consultation for lower eyelid surgery Surrey plastic surgeon, Dr. Imran Ratanshi, will review your specific eyelid concerns and tailor a treatment plan that works best for you. A comprehensive assessment of the tissues surrounding your eye and overall face will be performed to help identify the features contributing to your concerns.
Lower Eyelid Surgery takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to perform. Prior to your surgery, Dr. Ratanshi will make markings to help plan the areas that need to be addressed. Lower Eyelid Surgery is a procedure performed under general anesthesia for your safety. An incision is designed by Dr. Ratanshi to camouflage the final scar just below your eyelash line. In some cases, an additional incision is made on the inner surface of the eyelid. You will be put to sleep by a board-certified Anesthesiologist. Local freezing medication is also used to help maintain your comfort. Your incisions are closed in multiple layers to offload tension and heal with a fine-line scar. Often a stitch is placed to support your lower eyelid that requires removal at one week. In some cases, ultrafine dissolving sutures may be used.
Following Lower Eyelid Surgery, patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort which can be managed with pain medication and cold compresses. Most individuals are able to resume their normal activities within a week, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks.
As swelling subsides and the healing process progresses, you will begin to notice the full effects of your Lower Lid Blepharoplasty. Over time, incision lines will fade leaving you with a natural looking result that enhances your overall appearance.
While most patients will achieve an excellent result, with any surgical procedure, there are risks and complications. It’s essential for individuals considering this procedure to consult with a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, like Dr. Ratanshi, who can assess their candidacy, discuss goals and expectations, and provide personalized recommendations based on their unique anatomy and medical history.
Risks of Lower Eyelid Surgery include, but are not limited to:
